John Henry Hobart (1775-1830) was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and the College of New Jersey (Princeton), where he graduated in 1793. He was a tutor at the College of New Jersey in 1796, the year he received his MA. A priest in the Protestant Episcopal Church and Caldwell's life-long friend, Hobart became Bishop of the Diocese of New York and Rector of Trinity Church in New York City in 1816. He also was professor of pastoral theology and pulpit eloquence in the General Theological Seminary, which he established to train young men for the ministry.
